Missoula Montana is home to one of the nation’s fastest growing hockey communities. Every year more people join the ranks of those who simply can’t get enough of the fastest game on ice. Over 600 young adults and almost 600 men and women participate weekly in this great game in a fantastic city. Some folks grew up “back east” or in the midwest playing hockey. When they arrive in Missoula these hockey lovers find a community which has embraced the game with a grass roots organization responsible for building not one but two locally owned and supported hockey rinks, both located at and in cooperation with the Missoula County Fairgrounds. Others are growing up with a great youth hockey program in their back yard and are being introduced to hockey by their friends who love the game.
I am one of those who grew up in the midwest and played high-school hockey. When I moved to Missoula in 1977 I was disappointed to find “no ice” other than local outdoor parks. Missoula winters are mild, so we rarely had consistent ice to skate on. When I got married and started a family I wanted to see my kids have the same chance to play hockey that I did growing up. Eventually a group of like-minded parents took it upon themselves to begin developing a refrigerated rink at the fairgrounds. That process began in the early 1990’s and has grown to what can only be described as one of Montana’s great grass-roots community sports success stories.
We now have DOZENS of mens teams run through the “GHL” (Glacier Hockey League), A and B travel teams for all ages of kids plus a great house league for those young people who don’t want to do “travel hockey”. WHAM is the Women’s Hockey Association of Missoula which organizes a fantastic women’s hockey league. The University of Montana fields both women’s and men’s club teams. And the latest news is the formation of the “Missoula Maulers”, a Junior level hockey team which will be starting up action in Missoula fall of 2007.
Wow! What a great community. What a great sport. What fun to be a part of a growing, thriving, community supported sports phenomenon.
So, come and join us in the coming pages as we introduce to the PEOPLE that make Missoula Hockey such a great part of our community. My hope is that this site will inspire people of all ages, boys and girls, men and women to join in, support our teams, our coaches, the players, refs and fans who make Missoula Hockey a place where dreams begin.
